Your mornings can make or break your entire day. We’ve all had those sluggish, groggy mornings where everything feels off, and no matter how much caffeine we drink, we can’t seem to get the day started on the right foot. The truth is, many of us set ourselves up for these frustrating days by unknowingly engaging in habits that hinder our body’s natural wake-up process.

Let’s dive into the nine common mistakes you should avoid when you first wake up, and how making a few simple adjustments can make a huge difference in how you feel throughout the day.

Hit the Snooze Button

The dreaded snooze button. We’ve all been there, just five more minutes, right? While it may seem harmless, hitting snooze disrupts your sleep cycle and actually makes you feel more tired.

When you hit snooze, you’re starting a new sleep cycle that your body won’t be able to complete in those few extra minutes. As a result, you wake up feeling even more groggy and disoriented.

Try setting your alarm for the time you actually need to get up and avoid the temptation of pressing snooze. Your body will thank you for a more natural, refreshing start to the day.

Make Your Bed Right Away

We’ve all been told that making your bed first thing in the morning is a sign of productivity, but it’s actually a move that can work against you. The truth is, your bed sheets need time to breathe.

After hours of lying down, your body has produced moisture that gets trapped under the covers. By making your bed immediately, you trap this moisture, creating the perfect environment for dust mites and bacteria.

Leave your bed unmade for a little while after you wake up to allow the sheets and mattress to air out and dry. Your bed will be cleaner, and you’ll sleep better the next night.

Grab Your Phone First

The first thing many of us do when we wake up is check our phones, emails, social media notifications, and text messages flood our brains with a rush of information. This instant barrage of external input can trigger stress and anxiety, even before you’ve had a chance to fully wake up.

Try leaving your phone out of reach for at least the first 20 minutes after waking up. Instead, use that time to breathe deeply, stretch, or simply enjoy some quiet moments before diving into the digital world.

Drink Coffee on an Empty Stomach

Let’s face it, coffee is essential for most of us in the morning. But drinking coffee first thing on an empty stomach can cause more harm than good. Your cortisol levels (the stress hormone) are naturally higher in the morning, and drinking coffee can spike them even more, leaving you feeling jittery and anxious.

Wait at least 30 minutes before having your first cup of coffee. Start your day with water and a healthy breakfast, and enjoy your coffee later, once your body has had time to adjust to the new day.

Stay in Darkness

If you wake up in a dark room and remain there without exposure to light, your body might still think it’s nighttime. This can confuse your internal body clock and make it harder to shake off the sleepiness. Exposure to light, especially natural sunlight, signals to your brain it’s time to wake up, helping reset your circadian rhythm.

As soon as you wake up, open the curtains or turn on bright lights to help your body’s internal clock adjust. If it’s still dark outside, consider using a bright light or a light therapy box to simulate daylight.

Skip Breakfast

Skipping breakfast is one of the most common mistakes people make when trying to rush through the morning. However, after a long night of sleep, your body is essentially running on empty. Skipping breakfast can cause you to feel sluggish, irritable, and unfocused, making it harder to get things done.

Make time for a healthy breakfast that includes protein, fiber, and healthy fats. This will give you the energy to start your day on the right foot, keep your metabolism going, and prevent mid-morning crashes. Try oatmeal with nuts, avocado toast, or scrambled eggs with vegetables for a filling, nutritious option.

Skip Drinking Water

Did you know that your body becomes dehydrated during sleep? Dehydration can cause fatigue, brain fog, and even hunger. Yet, many of us reach for a cup of coffee or a sugary drink first thing, skipping the most important part of hydration.

Start your day by drinking a glass of water to rehydrate your body. This simple habit can jump-start your metabolism, improve digestion, and help you feel more energized throughout the morning.

Stay in Bed Too Long

It’s tempting to linger in the comfort of your bed, especially when it’s cold outside or if you don’t have a packed schedule. However, staying in bed too long after you wake up can make it harder for your body to transition into “active mode.” It also gives your mind more time to ruminate on the day’s tasks or potential stressors.

Try to get up within 10–15 minutes of waking up. This will signal your body that the day has begun, making it easier to get into a productive and active state. You don’t need to jump out of bed and start running a marathon, but even a few minutes of stretching or light movement can help you shake off sleep.

Skip Stretching

After hours of being stationary in bed, your body’s muscles may feel stiff and tight. Ignoring this stiffness can lead to aches and discomfort throughout the day. Stretching after waking up is an excellent way to improve circulation, relieve tension, and help your body feel more agile.

Take 5 minutes to stretch your arms, legs, back, and neck. You can do simple stretches like reaching for the ceiling, touching your toes, or twisting your torso. This helps warm up your muscles and prepares your body for movement throughout the day.

Eat a Sugary Breakfast

Many of us are drawn to sugary breakfast options like pastries, cereal, or sweetened yogurt. These choices may give you a quick sugar high, but they can lead to a crash later in the day. A sugary breakfast causes a spike in blood sugar, followed by a rapid drop that leaves you feeling tired, cranky, and unfocused.

Opt for a balanced breakfast that includes complex carbs, protein, and healthy fats. Whole grain toast with eggs, a smoothie with greens and protein, or yogurt with fruit and nuts are much better options that will keep your blood sugar stable throughout the morning.
